How to get started in Real Estate in Ontario

This page will outline the specific requirements for how to get started in Real Estate Ontario.

If you are planning to get into the real estate in Ontario, there are few very important things you must consider to get started on a positive note. The first most important step would be to acquire your Ontario real estate license certificate. This is a pre-requisite if you want to join the real estate market as an agent.

You will be issued your license after you have joined an Ontario realty brokerage firm that is registered with the Real Estate Council of Ontario (R.E.C.O). It is imperative to register yourself with the R.E.C.O through a brokerage firm within one year of passing your final exam. You would need to fill in the registration form, a few sections of which also need to be filled and authorized by your employer- the realty brokerage firm. Once your application gets accepted, you will be issued your Ontario real estate license certificate.

Once you have obtained the license, you may start off immediately or hold it active with a brokerage firm. Most realty firms charge for keeping your license active with them. It is always advisable to get into a monthly contract with the firm so that you do not need to pay an annual charge as the parking fee. Whenever you decide to take your license off hold, do not forget to transfer it to another Ontario Brokerage firm of your choice.

The next important consideration is the type of real estate in Ontario you want to deal in. There are different types of real estate in Ontario such as residential homes and condos, apartments, commercial properties, industrial buildings, leasing, and so on. Any further action will depend upon your decision to choose which type of properties you want to specialize in or the type of brokerage you want to become a part of.

Once you have decided the type of real estate in Ontario you want to deal in, approach a broker or brokerage firm that specializes in that particular type of real estate. This will allow you to know in depth about the real estate market you have chosen. Also, learn how the firm can support you and how much commission it is willing to pay you. Compare several firms before choosing the one that appeals you the most and which you think can help you in meeting your career goals.

If you are just out there with a degree in real estate, it is always advisable to go slow before you actually jump into the Ontario Realty market. Take time to ensure that you are on the right track.
