Milton’s local conservation areas are Mountsberg, Hilton Falls, Crawford Lake, Rattlesnake Point and Kelso/Glen Eden. The Bruce Trail (www.brucetrail.org) paths run through many of these conservation areas along the Niagara Escarpment (www.escarpment.org).
Here is a more information about each one of these destination conservation areas:
Mountsberg Conservation Area (www.hrca.on.ca): You will find 445 hectares of woodland and lakeshore trails that swirl through a maple sugar bush and through beautiful wetlands. Truly a bird watcher’s paradise. Another popular spot is the Raptor Center and wildlife walkway which features owls, eagles, buffalo, elk and other animals up close. Hilton Falls Conservation Area (www.ontariotrails.on.ca/trails-a-z/hilton-falls) is the largest conservation area and features a picturesque 10 metre waterfall that cascades over the Niagara Escarpment. There is also a historical mill and a 16km trail for bikers, walkers and cross-country skiers. For more information call 905-854-0262.
Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area (www.conservationhalton.on.ca) has some of the most beautiful scenic views and is a perfect spot of rock climbers, campers and picknickers. There are 5 breathtaking lookouts at the edge of the towering cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment and 3 designated sites where experienced rock climbers can scale challenging cliffs. For those who enjoy hiking, the Bruce Trail takes you through the Nassagaweya Canyon (www.ontariotrails.on.ca/trails-a-z/nassagaweya-canyon-trail) and has trail connections to Crawford Lake. Crawford Lake Conservation Area (www.conservationhalton.on.ca) features an Iroquoian Village alongside the Nassagaweya Canyon. Celebrating the native spirit and life of Ontario’s first inhabitants, the reconstructed village will take you back in time. The beautiful and scenic lake is locatedin the forests atop the stunning Niagara Escarpment. Come and see the soaring turkey vultures glide through the Nassagaweya Canyon. Kelso Conservation Area (www.conservationhalton.on.ca)/ Glen Eden Ski and Snowboard Centre (www.gleneden.on.ca)is a beautiful year round destination for swimmers, hikers, overnight campers and skiers and snowboarders. Nestled in the scenic Niagara Escarpment, it is also the home of the Halton Region Museum (www.halton.ca/discovering_halton/halton_region_museum) which preserves the history of Halton (www.halton.ca) and its people.
