The Provincial Government has Set the 2019 Rental Property Maximum Increase Guideline

 
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has released the province's rent increase guideline for 2019. The 2019 guideline will be 1.8 per cent. For previous years' increase guidelines, please see the table below.

These are the latest maximum rental increase guidelines

SAMPLE RENT INCREASE GUIDELINE

Your monthly rent was increased to $1,000 on June 1, 2018. The guideline for 2019 is 1.8%. Therefore:

  • an increase of 1.8% on $1,000 = $18.00
  • $1,000 + $18.00 = $1,018.00

Your landlord could lawfully increase your rent payment 12 months later on June  1, 2019 up to $1,018.00 per month

Your landlord would need to provide you written notice at least 90 days before June  1, 2019.

 

Previous rules and guildlines

The guideline applies to most private residential rental accomodation covered by the Tenant Protection Act, 1997. The guideline does not apply to residential dwellings first occupied (by any owner or tenant) on or after November 1, 1991.
